Investing in rural youth

Jazmine Murray’s journey is a powerful example of how investing in rural youth creates lasting impact. With support from Pāmu Farms and First Foundation, she shows how targeted investment in young talent is helping to future-proof New Zealand’s workforce and strengthen the agribusiness sector.

Jazmine Murray grew up on a family farm in the isolated community of Broadwood, North Hokianga, population fewer than 400. Today, she is a third-year Law and Accounting student at the University of Waikato, determined to give back to rural communities like the one that raised her.

Her transformative journey has been made possible through a partnership between First Foundation and Pāmu Farms of New Zealand, illustrating how investing in youth talent profoundly shapes future leaders and benefits New Zealand communities.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support from First Foundation and Pāmu Farms,” says Jazmine.

“Growing up rurally, resources were limited, but I learned resilience and resourcefulness. The scholarship and mentorship opened my eyes to entirely new opportunities.”

Mentorship and opportunity open new doors

First Foundation provides scholarships built around three crucial pillars: financial assistance, dedicated mentoring, and exposure to the professional world. For Jazmine, the financial support was a welcome relief, but the value she places on mentorship and professional experience has been profound.

Her mentor, Kate Simmons from Jacobs in Kerikeri, has played a pivotal role in Jazmine’s growth, offering guidance around strategic decision-making, patience, and personal development. “Kate taught me to step back, reflect, and make decisions thoughtfully,” Jazmine explains. “Those insights are invaluable.”

Recently, Jazmine joined fellow scholars Nora Paicu and Myra Smith on an agribusiness exposure trip to Taranaki, facilitated by First Foundation and supported by Pāmu Farms of New Zealand. Visits to leading-edge farming operations and industry leaders gave Jazmine a fresh perspective on agriculture as a dynamic, innovative sector incorporating technology, data analysis, and strategic planning.

“Seeing farms operate as businesses, with sophisticated technology and strategic financial planning, completely reshaped how I view the industry,” she shares. “It’s exciting, and I can genuinely see myself contributing.”

Shaping the future of agribusiness leadership

Jazmine’s recent selection as a finalist for the Youth Ambassador role with the Royal Agricultural Society further demonstrates her leadership potential. She aims to promote rural development and ensure agricultural traditions remain relevant for future generations.

CEO of First Foundation, Kirk Sargent, highlights Jazmine’s journey as an example of the critical impact businesses like Pāmu Farms have on empowering New Zealand’s future workforce.

“Jazmine’s story highlights the importance of connecting our talented young people with real-world opportunities. Pāmu’s support has not only shaped Jazmine’s future but will positively impact her community for years to come.”

Looking ahead, Jazmine is determined to use her experiences to open doors for other young people from rural backgrounds. “First Foundation and Pāmu Farms have invested in me,” she says. “Now, I’m committed to doing the same for others.”
