EXPOSURE TO THE WORLD OF WORK

Open doors to professional success

Not everyone has the same access to networks that can kick-start their careers, especially those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Unlocking early, relevant exposure to the world of work is transformational.

Insights and connections change career aspirations

Being locked out because you have no ‘inroads’ is known as ‘the strength of weak ties’. It refers to social capital – or rather lack of it. Professional success relies on more than just academic ability: it demands a bridge between talent and opportunity.

Our ‘Exposure to the World of Work’ pillar gives talented young people a hand up to cross the gap. It opens up influential social and professional networks typically unavailable to students from lower-decile schools. They gain an understanding of workplace skills, etiquette and expectations that helps them launch their careers.

“My internship helped me gain insight into other career pathways. I was encouraged to step into spaces I once considered intimidating and out of my scope.”

Meaningful work experience is changing, just like work itself

New technology, work environments and funding streams are changing the world of work. It’s why we regularly review our approach to ensure our scholars are prepared for the future.

Today, more work is virtual, and so is the recruitment process itself. We also have increased support from private donors and trusts that can’t host scholars for traditional work experience placements. Networks and connections remain crucial.

Our Exposure to the World of Work framework responds to this evolution with two parallel pathways, depending on what a scholarship partner can offer.

Paid Work Experience pathway

Scholarship Partners from the corporate world are in a unique position to bring their scholars into their teams.

Paid work experience with scholarship partners typically starts with a 4-6 week summer internship at the end of Year 13. For students aspiring to join the professional world, this paid work experience offers a foot in the door. At the same time, these young people contribute fresh perspectives to the teams they join.

Career Catalyst pathway

Scholars without corporate partners springboard to career success through a series of site visits, experiential learning, targeted workshops and more.

Key sectors like law, engineering, health, digital, and finance partner with us to welcome scholars to their events and sites.

Together, a calendar of experiences opens doors to professional life and helps scholars see what’s possible.

“You just can’t put a monetary value on the connections that you make through First Foundation events, networking opportunities and work on site.”
“You can tap into a network of thousands. Without the scholarship, I don’t know how I would have been able to get such a foot in the door.”

Whether a scholar is supported by a company or a trust, they’ll build relationships, learn about industry and expand their aspirations. We’re preparing students for their first jobs as well as equipping them to thrive, lead, and give back.

We can make these experiences available to even more young people with your support. Ready to help? Funding scholarships is the most transformational contribution you can make. Here are some further ways Scholarship Partners can help open doors.
