Aston Moss mentors to ‘pay it forward’

Aston Moss benefited from mentorship and guidance early in his career, and he’s paying it forward as a Mentor for First Foundation and a passionate advocate.
“What better an opportunity to help someone early in their career, which can often have a huge multiplier effect on their future?”

“I can’t speak more highly of what Kirk and the team at First Foundation do,” he says. Mentoring scholars gives him immense satisfaction.

Aston Moss came across First Foundation as Head of HR at Briscoes. Briscoes has provided 31 scholarships since 2013 to employees or their family members in a scholarship jointly funded by Briscoes Group and the RA Duke Family Trust.

“We invest in the future, not just for the benefit of the company but for New Zealand Inc.”

Aston says the personalised guidance of a dedicated mentor is an essential part of what makes “this magnificent programme” so successful.

“People understand and learn in different ways, so it’s essential to make it relevant to the individual.” He says so much of the mentor’s value is simply from being a reliable sounding board, encourager, and role model.

Paying it forward

Aston brings a first-hand appreciation for the power of mentoring. He started his work life working in a supermarket after school. But unlike most casual checkout operators, he stayed for sixteen years, working in a range of roles while completing a degree – and eventually, a Master’s. He eventually joined their management training scheme and became Head of HR.

Aston credits his early career success to the people around him, particularly one manager who saw something special in him and helped to draw out his talents.

“He’s been my mentor for 30 years now. He’s always there if I need to ask a question or seek wise counsel. He helped nurture me personally and professionally.”

The support and guidance were invaluable in building Aston’s career, and giving back as a First Foundation mentor is a way to recognise and honour this. He encourages others to consider the role of mentors in their own lives.

“You can pay that forward as a First Foundation mentor. I’ve seen the incredible work this small team does and the life-changing impact of the programme on young people, their families, and communities.”
