DEPUTY HEAD BOY 2010
Joel is recognised as an extremely talented
young man who has always been one step ahead of his peers. Joel's
school academic achievements alone are outstanding and when coupled
with his talent as an accomplished flautist, a youth and kids
leader in his church community, an avid Water Polo player and
school leader, it is clear that Joel is a stand out all-rounder. In
2008 Joel was awarded the prestigious Colgan Scholarship for
all-round Excellence and passed his IGCSE Cambridge Mathematics
Examination with A+. In 2010 Joel finished NCEA with Excellence at
every level and was made Senior Dux.
When awarding Joel with a First Foundation Scholarship, Steve Lowe,
CEO of Alcatel-Lucent New Zealand, said "as the leading
telecommunications infrastructure provider in the country,
Alcatel-Lucent is constantly looking to identify and support the
future leaders and innovators of our industry. Joel demonstrates
the inquisitiveness, passion and drive needed to succeed in an
industry as dynamic and fast-moving as Telecommunications." Joel
regards his partnership with Alcatel-Lucent NZ as a life changing
opportunity which motivates him in his Engineering studies through
The University of Auckland.
In his spare time, Joel builds computers and restores old cars. He
also volunteers at his church, working as a leader for the holiday
programmes and TGIF Friday night kids' club.
Joel studied at The University of Auckland and completed
his Bachelor of Engineering (hons), majoring in Mechatronics
Engineering with first Class Honours. On the possibility of
receiving a First Foundation Scholarship, Joel had the following
comments: 'the opportunities provided by this prestigious
scholarship are enormous, and it would allow me to pursue my goals
unhindered, along with the certain help and support of a mentor and
fellow students to drastically change my life experiences.'
"As the leading telecommunications infrastructure provider in the
country, Alcatel-Lucent is constantly looking to identify and
support the future leaders and innovators of our industry. When
Joel was a senior at Kelston Boys High School, he built
his own computer - demonstrating the inquisitiveness, passion and
drive needed to succeed in an industry as dynamic and fast-moving
as Telecommunications. This scholarship will afford Joel the
opportunity to be part of an organisation that has technology
leadership and excellence embedded in its DNA - a valuable
environment to enable his University Engineering studies to
flourish." - Steve Lowe, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent in New Zealand.
Joel worked as an Embedded Systems Engineer at PowerbyProxi
and on May 25, 2015 he started a new job in Silcon Valley at
Tesla Motors .
